The standard format was 8 cheaply printed 4 by 6 inches pages, often showing movie stars and popular cartoon characters in sexual positions. The writers and artists were usually anonymous.The origin of the term Tijuana bible is not known.

Tijuana bibles have some similarities with underground comics. Their theft of copyright characters is similar to the actions of air pirates funnies.
